Toddler Learning Activities

Home Teaching toddlers

Here you will find toddler learning ideas.

What I have found is that toddlers tend to learn fairly easily if the teaching is short and lots of fun. Doing activities together also encourages your toddler to learn.

Choose a time of day when your toddler is most awake and not hungry, also make sure you are able to take time to be with your toddler to do an activity. They will need your undivided attention. Your toddler will learn best if you are excited about their acheivements.

If you want to go about teaching toddlers formally with a curriculum here are a couple of links. These will take you to sites offering curriculum.

Tips for Teaching Toddlers:

  • Always pick times when your youngster is at their best to try teaching them.
  • Don't try to teach your child when they are tired, thirsty or hungry.
  • Teach in short busts because little ones have a short attention span usually.
  • Make the teaching fun.
  • Make sure you are feeling patient.
  • You will need to put aside a little time to sit with your child.
  • Try to ensure you are not disturbed by the phone or anything else if possible.

You can easily teach toddlers as you go about your everyday life. They learn as they play. Invest in some educational toys for toddlers, don't forget to use books as well. Our toddlers loved to look at books with us, there are some great books out there as well.

Teaching Ideas

  • For instance talk about colors, say "look this apple is red, can you find something else that is red in the room"?
  • The leaves are green, can you touch something else that is green.
  • Find the yellow block.
  • Can you find the matching block.

Cut up colored shapes and hide them around the room, let your child hunt for them. You can do this with pairs of colors, help your children to match them up.

  • Does this feel cold or warm?
  • Does this feel hard or soft?
  • Do counting
  • Count stairs as you go up and down.
  • Count the apples.
