Toddler Development
Giving Time - Teaching Skills for Life

As parents and cares we are always concerned about toddler development.

I don't know about you but we were always checking with other parents.

What is your Johnny doing now?

Oh! he is crawling...walking.

Then we measure what our own toddlers are doing.

As parents of four we both recognise that we did that and that we were concerned if our toddler had not reached their developmental milestones.

It is important to keep in mind though that toddlers develop at their own pace.

Some will develop in an area earlier than other toddlers, some later.

Develomental milestones are there as a guidance.

Having said that, of course, if you are worried at all speak to your health visitor.

Welcome

Toddler development milestones.

These can be split into several broad areas: toddler

Language.... this includes speech, body language, being able to interpret body language and the ability to understand language.

Movement..... which incorporates: Fine motor skills and Gross motor skills.

  • Gross motor skills..... include; sitting, crawling. balance, walking, and running.
  • Fine motor skills....... are things like using pincer movements with fingers to be able to pick up small items,
  • the ability to hold objects and manipuate them ie. drawing, feeding themselves.

toddler developmentSocial skills....this covers responding to family members and others appropriately, empathy for others, and the ability to engage in play with others

toddler birthday partiesCognitive skills..... memory skills, reasoning skills, understanding skills, learning skills and thinking skills.

Between the ages of 1 to 3 your toddler will change rapidly. The little immobile baby you once had is now into everything. This is also the time when your toddler will get into scrapes and may hurt themselves as they are into everything and know no danger. Except that is for strangers or even people they know well who suddenly become the enemy as your toddler becomes more clingy.
